CMS Installation Test: Joomla! 1.5

Today, we announced the rules of the “CMS Installation Test”.  In this “competition” we’ll be installing a CMS as fast as humanly possible.  The end goal of

each installation is to have a website, with the features you can find here.    The idea is how to see how other CMS measure up to the famous “5 minute installation of WordPress”.

Joomla 1.5.21

In todays installisode, we’re going to put Joomla!  1.5.21 to the test.  Joomla! is known as a versatile CMS, with lots of options (over 6,000 extensions are listed in the JED).  But how does it perform when it comes to INSTALLATION SPEED?  We had our fingers crossed, because Joomla! is by far our favorite CMS.  Twitter rumors suggest it can be done in 7 minutes, but are those rumors true?!

Reminder:

  • We install everything on our localhost.
  • The installation packages are already unpacked
  • Downloads of extensions do not count towards end time
  • We “simulated” a scenario where all needed add-ons were readily available.

Start the clock!

0:00 – 2:00

We navigate to the “Joomla site” – in our case, http://localhost/joomlaspeed – and configure the website.  Databasename, Admin account and Website Name are all set up in under two minutes.  Because the rules say “No sample data must be left over”, we don’t install the sample data at all.

2:00 – 3:00

We set up a Section and Category.  The rules require that we can post multiple articles on one page, so publishing the article to the front page won’t do.

3:00 – 5:00

We copy and paste the article.  We lost some time trying to add an image as the default editor – TinyMCE hides the option to insert an image at the bottom… To comply with the rules we take care of the lay-out:  we add the subheaders and add bullet points and an “ordered list”.   Once the article is complete, we add the modules for “Latest Articles” and “Most Read”.

5:00 – 7:30

We install our “Comments” plug-in and skim over the configuration.  We choose to use the standard setup.  We quickly install the Social Bookmarks plug-in and enable it.  We’re done, our basic website is complete!

What we used for this test:

Joomla 1.5.21

JComments

Joomla! Sexy Bookmarks

The standard modules for “Most read” and “Latest News”
